The Power of Your SmartPhone...for Turf Health!
• Quantify turf color and quality
• Identify turf stress before it’s too late
• Help manage fertilization and irrigation practices
The FieldScout GreenIndex+ Turf app utilizes the latest advancements in technology to measure plant health via the chlorophyll content (relative greenness) of turf using a smartphone camera. The app captures turfgrass images with a smartphone, calculates the Dark Green Color Index (DGCI), and displays a visual rating. Users can customize the visual rating calculation for different species of grass and specific plots of land. Measurements can be compared to identify variability or trends in turf health across golf course greens and fairways, as well as other sports fields, providing valuable data for decisions regarding fertilization and irrigation. Additional applications include lawn care and commercial turf for better nutrient management. The data is logged and geo-referenced, and can be emailed to a personal computer for further analysis.
Because the eyes are very subjective, they are unable to detect minor changes in turf greenness that might be early warning signs that the turf is under stress. Stress can occur due to a variety of reasons, including nitrogen deficiency, lack of water, compaction, or the onset of diseases. The precision of a smartphone camera helps detect minor changes in turf greenness over time and/or relative to other areas of the golf course or sports field. This allows golf course superintendents and turf management specialists to make critical decisions in real time without high up-front costs.
The app uses specific green and yellow color standards on a target reference board to calculate the DGCI and corresponding visual rating. For added convenience, the visual rating displayed by GreenIndex+ Turf can be customized to match your rating protocol. Rating scales can be saved by turf variety for re-use.
